Now you are prepared for the Courses
You may like to do an Introductory Course to understand what Officiating is all about, followed by the General Principles Course
Do the Technical Officials – Introduction Course (optional):
- to get an overview of all the units available to technical officials,
- some information about competency based training,
- and show you the pathway in the National Officiating Accreditation Program.
To do this course:
Login to the Swimming Australia Online Learning Portal and select
Technical Officials – Introduction Course
Do the Essential Skills course
Community Officiating General Principles Course
Following on from the Introduction Course, you are required to do the Essential Skills course. This is required before attempting your first assessment.
To do this course:
Undertake the Essential Skills course: (this is a one-off course but mandatory!)
- Register or Login at the SwimAus Learning Centre
- Click on “Find Learning” and do a search for Essential Skills. This will show you the Community Officiating Essential Skills Course. This course is mandatory.
At the completion of the course, save the award page for later reference.
This has to be forwarded to the ATSC Convenor as evidence that you have done the course.

What order should I do the courses for officials in?
Group 1a These positions have no authority to report infractions of the rules:
Timekeeper
Chief Timekeeper
Check Starter
Clerk of the Course (i.e., marshal)
Finish Judge
Chief Recorder
Group 1b Positions which have authority to report infractions of the rules:
Starter
Inspector of Turns
Judge of Stroke
Group 2
 Referee (Level 1)
Multi Class Referee
Self Management for Advanced Officials
Group 3 These positions do not require prior experience:
Announcer
AOE Operator
Dolphin Timing Operator
Working in your new intended role under the guidance of a mentor will provide the best outcome from your assessment.
Referee (Level 1) can only be achieved after all Group 1a and Group 1b modules have been successfully completed.
Officiating
Having obtained your credential, you can officiate in that position at Club Meets, or at any MetSEA Area Meet, or at any State Meet.
You are encouraged to obtain higher level experience by offering assistance at State Level Meets.
Do not be intimidated, as we have all started off this way.
By gaining experience at any of these Meets, you will be in a position to nominate for Australian or International Meets.
Pathways to higher levels
Having achieved Level 1 Starter or level 1 Referee, you have the opportunity to proceed to Level 2 (i.e., to officiate at
State Meets (Metropolitan, Country, State Age, State Open).
